Our commitment to inclusive digital access
Accessible by design.
We target WCAG 2.1 Level AA across every platform. Keyboard navigation, screen reader support, and assistive technology compatibility are built in, not bolted on.
The standard
What we build to, and how.
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), are the internationally recognised standard for web accessibility. We also follow guidance from the European Accessibility Act (EAA) and Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act where applicable.
WCAG 2.1 Principles
Level AA targetWCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance means our website and platforms are designed to be perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust.
| Principle | What it means |
|---|---|
| Perceivable | Information and interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive (through sight, sound, or touch) |
| Operable | Interface components and navigation must be operable by all users, including those using keyboards, screen readers, or other assistive technologies |
| Understandable | Information and operation of the interface must be understandable, with clear language and predictable behaviour |
| Robust | Content must be robust enough to be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies |
Accessibility features
Implemented site-wideWe have implemented the following accessibility features across our website and platforms.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Semantic HTML | Proper heading structure, landmarks, and semantic elements help screen readers navigate content logically |
| Keyboard navigation | All interactive elements are accessible via keyboard. Tab order follows a logical sequence |
| Focus indicators | Clear, visible focus indicators show which element is currently selected when navigating by keyboard |
| Colour contrast | Text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text) |
| Responsive design | Content adapts to different screen sizes and supports zoom up to 200% without loss of functionality |
| Alt text | All meaningful images include descriptive alternative text. Decorative images are marked appropriately |
| Clear language | We write in plain, clear language and avoid jargon. Reading level is appropriate for our international audience |
| Reduced motion | Animations are minimised or disabled for users who have enabled reduce motion in their system preferences |
| Skip links | A skip to main content link appears when you start tabbing on any page, allowing keyboard users to bypass navigation |
| Form accessibility | All form fields have associated labels, error messages are clearly announced, and required fields are indicated both visually and programmatically |
Assistive technology support
TestedOur website and platforms are designed to work with common assistive technologies. We test with NVDA and VoiceOver as part of our development process.
| Technology | Examples | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Screen readers | NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack | Supported |
| Screen magnifiers | ZoomText, Windows Magnifier, macOS Zoom | Supported |
| Voice control | Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Voice Control (macOS/iOS) | Supported |
| Keyboard-only | Standard keyboards, switch devices | Supported |
| High contrast | Windows High Contrast, macOS Increase Contrast | Supported |
If you experience issues with a specific assistive technology, please let us know.
Where it applies
Every platform we use.
TEEI uses several platforms to deliver our programmes. Here is the accessibility status of each.
TEEI Website
Our main website (theeducationalequalityinstitute.org) is built with accessibility as a core requirement and aims to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
TEEI Language & Mentorship platform
TEEI Language and TEEI Mentorship run on a platform we build and operate ourselves, which means accessibility fixes there are in our own hands. Barriers you meet on the platform can be reported through the same feedback channel as this website.
itslearning (LMS)
Our learning management system provides screen reader support, keyboard navigation, customisable display settings, and alternative text for images in course content.
Donation Platform
Our donation forms (powered by Fundraise Up) are designed to be accessible, with proper form labels and keyboard support.
Transparency
Known limitations and what we do about them.
While we strive for full accessibility, we are aware of some current limitations. Accessibility is an ongoing commitment, not a one-time achievement.
Known issues
- Some older PDF documents may not be fully accessible. We are working to remediate these and provide accessible alternatives on request.
- We are progressively adding captions to video content. If you need captions for a specific video, please contact us.
- Some embedded content from third parties (e.g., social media feeds) may not meet our accessibility standards.
- Some charts and graphs may have limited accessibility. We provide text alternatives where possible.
Continuous improvement
- Regular audits: we conduct periodic accessibility reviews of our website and platforms
- Training: our team receives training on accessibility best practices
- User testing: we involve people with disabilities in testing new features where possible
- Vendor requirements: we include accessibility requirements when selecting third-party platforms and tools
- Feedback integration: we use accessibility feedback to prioritise improvements
Recent improvements
- Added skip links to all pages (December 2025)
- Improved colour contrast across the website (December 2025)
- Added focus indicators for keyboard navigation (December 2025)
- Implemented reduced motion support (December 2025)
