In response to the war in Ukraine, The Educational Equality Institute (TEEI) has expanded its successful Buddy Programme to support Ukrainian newcomers in Norway. Thanks to generous funding from IMDI (The Norwegian Directorate of Integration and Diversity), we’re now offering specialised support through “The Buddy Programme for Ukraina.”
Our Approach
This programme combines digital and in-person activities, building close connections between Ukrainian newcomers and Norwegian residents. Built on the foundation of our established Buddy Programme, this initiative adds distinctly Norwegian elements to support cultural integration while preserving Ukrainian identity.
Programme Benefits
- Builds genuine friendships between Ukrainians and Norwegians
- Encourages natural language learning through regular interaction
- Enables cultural exchange in both directions
- Helps Ukrainian newcomers settle into their new community
- Provides a support network during the transition period
Through these carefully designed interactions, we create spaces where real relationships can grow, helping Ukrainian newcomers feel at home while strengthening Norwegian communities through cultural exchange.
Building Connections, Creating Community
The TEEI Buddy Programme creates a welcoming environment where Ukrainians can develop a genuine sense of belonging in their new Norwegian communities. Here’s how we make it happen:
Core Programme Components
1. Personalised Matchmaking
We carefully pair Ukrainian newcomers with Norwegian residents, considering shared interests and compatibility. Connections are created both one-on-one and in small groups to build close relationships.
2. Regular Meet-Ups
Our structured gatherings bring people together in casual, friendly settings:
- Traditional Norwegian waffle gatherings
- Group walks and outdoor activities
- Monthly partner-sponsored events
- Informal social meetings
3. Community Events
Each city hosts two monthly cultural celebrations:
- A Norwegian-themed gathering to share local traditions
- A Ukrainian-themed event to celebrate and preserve cultural heritage
Cultural Exchange Activities
Exploring Together
- Weekly guided nature walks to discover Norway’s outdoor culture
- City exploration tours to familiarise newcomers with local areas
- Cultural landmarks visits and community orientation
Sharing Traditions
- Dinner Exchange Programme: Families take turns hosting meals featuring their national cuisines
- Language Practice: Natural language learning through regular interaction
- Cultural Workshops: Participants share their traditions, customs, and daily life experiences
Local Integration
- Support for participating in community events
- Guidance on accessing local resources and services
- Opportunities to contribute to and engage with the wider community
Through these varied activities, we create natural opportunities for cultural exchange, language practice, and lasting friendships. Each component is designed to support both Ukrainian newcomers and their Norwegian buddies in building lasting connections while learning from each other.

The Buddy Programme for Ukraina complements TEEI’s wider language support network. For Ukrainians who want structured language practice beyond what buddy conversations provide, Language Connect offers free 1-to-1 video sessions focused specifically on job-interview preparation. Many Ukrainian professionals in Norway also need guidance on career recognition; the Mentors for Ukraine programme connects them with 400+ volunteer mentors who understand European hiring practices. For the employment barriers that commonly affect displaced Ukrainians in Norway and across Europe, the analysis of employment among Ukrainian refugees provides helpful context.
