Community Investment Report Kit: Template and Example
A free template for the community section of a CSR report, with a B4SI field dictionary and an example built from TEEI public data.
- Part 1 The template A template you can copy into your own document, one section at a time.
- Part 2 The field dictionary A field dictionary that defines each field and places it in the Business for Societal Impact (B4SI) framework.
- Part 3 A worked example A worked example, filled in with TEEI’s own public figures, so you can see the template with real, checkable numbers in it.
This kit is for the person who writes the community section of a CSR report. It helps every figure say exactly what it can support. It has three parts:
- A template you can copy into your own document, one section at a time.
- A field dictionary that defines each field and places it in the Business for Societal Impact (B4SI) framework. It says where each number comes from, which period and denominator it needs, and what it cannot claim.
- A worked example, filled in with TEEI’s own public figures, so you can see the template with real, checkable numbers in it.
The reasoning behind each section is in our guide, How to write the community section of a CSR report. The framework terms come from the public B4SI Sample Guidance Manual (2025).1
Part 1: The template
Copy the outline below into your report draft. Then add each figure’s definition, B4SI level, claim level, source, period, denominator and limitation from the field dictionary in Part 2. Explain any empty field: an empty field with a reason is more useful to a reader than a missing one.

Part 2: The field dictionary
The “claim level” column uses the five levels from the guide: direct measure, supporting evidence, partial mapping, company data and not allowed.
| Field | Definition | B4SI level | Claim level | Source | Period | Denominator | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Verified delivery hours | Time employees spent delivering the activity, recorded by a system with a published rule (for example, time both people were in the same session) | Input: time | Direct measure | Partner’s session records and published method | The reporting period; state the time zone if it matters | Not applicable | Verified by the partner, not independently assured unless you name an assurer. Excludes sessions still awaiting evidence |
| Preparation and coordination hours | Time spent on onboarding, preparation and organising, outside delivery | Input: time for volunteering preparation; management costs for programme coordination | Company data | Company timesheets or estimates | The reporting period | Not applicable | Often estimated; say so. Never added to delivery hours |
| Hours in employees’ own time | Volunteering outside paid working time | Recorded separately from the paid-time input | Company data or direct measure | Partner records plus company policy on paid time | The reporting period | Not applicable | Not part of the time contribution cost |
| Time contribution (cost) | “The cost to the company of the paid working hours contributed by employees” | Input: time | Company data | Company payroll or average employee cost | The reporting period | Not applicable | Only the company can set this figure; a partner cannot |
| Cash and in-kind contributions | Donations and donated goods or services, reported separately | Input: cash and in-kind | Company data | Company accounts and valuation method | The reporting period | Not applicable | Exclude employee time already reported above |
| Sessions completed | Activities that took place under the partner’s definition of a completed session | Output: activities delivered | Supporting evidence | Partner’s records and published method | The reporting period | Not applicable | A count, not an assessment of quality or effect. Keep one-to-one and group sessions apart |
| Sessions awaiting evidence | Sessions marked as held whose attendance has not yet been confirmed | Method disclosure | Supporting evidence | Partner’s records | The moment of reading | Not applicable | Excluded from hours and sessions until confirmed; publish it so the exclusion is visible |
| Group participant hours | Each participant’s recorded time in group sessions, added together | Output | Supporting evidence | Partner’s records | The reporting period | Not applicable | Participant hours, not session or volunteer hours. Never added to one-to-one hours |
| People directly reached | People who took part in the activity, not those who might benefit indirectly | Output: people reached | Supporting evidence | Partner’s records | The reporting period, or “as last verified” with a date | State the unit: unique people or attendances | Reach is not change. A floor (“at least”) must keep its plus sign |
| Countries | Countries represented among the people reached, with the basis stated | Context: where | Supporting evidence | Partner’s records | State whether cumulative or for the period | Not applicable | Residence is not where delivery happened. Small counts may be suppressed |
| Employees involved | Unique employees who took part in at least one activity | Output: business output | Company data or direct measure | Partner records matched to company staff lists | The reporting period | Eligible employees invited, if you report a participation rate | Count each person once across programmes |
| Depth of impact | People who can report or show change: connect, improve or transform | Impact on people | Partial mapping at most, unless a verified source exists | Follow-up questions, tests or verified records | When the evidence was collected | Required: N asked, M answered | Never derived from hours or reach. State the method for each figure |
| Employee and business impacts | Changes for employees who took part, or for the company | Business impact | Company data | Company surveys or HR data | When the survey ran | Required: respondents and eligible employees | Keep apart from participants’ outcomes |
The definition of time contribution (cost) is quoted from the B4SI Sample Guidance Manual (2025).1
Part 3: A worked example
Example built from TEEI’s programme-wide data, not a company’s employee activity. It covers TEEI’s one-to-one conversation programmes as a whole. The figures come from TEEI’s published impact snapshot pub-2026-09-18T13-04Z-337ca44e (open the snapshot), observed on 18 September 2026 at 13:04 UTC. Where a figure has an earlier verification date or a different counting scope, the table says so. The live counter keeps moving, so a later reading will differ.
1. Scope and approach
- Programmes in scope: TEEI Language and TEEI Mentorship, one-to-one video sessions. The counter does not separate the two programmes.
- Excluded: other TEEI programmes, and group conversation clubs, which are reported on their own line below.
- Reporting period: all time, from 22 April 2022, with a second reading for the 30 days before 18 September 2026.
- Frameworks: B4SI Sample Guidance Manual (2025), public edition.1
- Verification statement: figures are verified by TEEI from its own session records and published method. They are not independently assured.
2. Inputs
| Field | Value | Source and period |
|---|---|---|
| Verified delivery hours | 9,070.4 conversation hours | Published snapshot, all time, observed 18 September 2026 |
| Preparation and coordination hours | Empty | Company data; not applicable to this example |
| Time contribution (cost) | Empty | Company data; only an employer can set it |
On TEEI’s current platform, a conversation hour is the time the volunteer and the learner were connected to the same video session together, capped at the booked window plus 30 minutes. Booked time is never added. The rule is set out in our impact methodology and the session method, and explained step by step in How TEEI counts a verified volunteer hour.
3. Outputs
| Field | Value | Source and period |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions completed (one-to-one) | 11,984 | Published snapshot, all time, observed 18 September 2026 |
| Bookings marked completed, last 30 days | 594 | Published snapshot, 30 days before 18 September 2026 |
| Sessions awaiting evidence | 7 | Published snapshot, at the moment of reading; excluded from the counter’s verified session and conversation-hour totals |
| Group sessions ended | 33, with 99.7 participant hours | Published snapshot, observed 18 September 2026; counted separately |
| Group attendances | 106 | Published snapshot; attendances, not unique people |
| Wider programme reach, for context | 8,000+ language learners and 2,000+ mentees | Last verified December 2025; cumulative since 2022. Language provision includes courses, not only one-to-one conversations |
| Countries | Members in 148 countries; volunteers in 127; learners in 65 | Published snapshot; country breakdown frozen 23 July 2026. Residence of registered members, not where delivery happened; the three figures overlap and are not added |
| Employees involved | Empty | Company data; not applicable to this example |
Two things in this table are deliberate. The group line and the one-to-one lines are never added together, because a participant hour and a conversation hour are different units. And the programme-reach line uses floors from an earlier verification date and a wider scope, so it does not describe the same period or the same activity as the session count. A report should say so rather than place them side by side as if they matched.
4. Impact on people reached
Empty in this example. A figure here needs an indicator, a method, a denominator and coverage. Hours, sessions and reach cannot fill it, and the example does not try to.
5. Employee and business impacts
Empty. These are company data.
6. Method and limitations
- Hours and sessions are verified by TEEI from its own session records, not certified by an external auditor.
- TEEI Language and TEEI Mentorship are combined in the counter and cannot be separated.
- The all-time session total combines records from the platform TEEI used before with the platform it runs now; the session method sets out the historical counting rule.
- Group participant hours are reported separately and never added to conversation hours.
- The programme-reach figures cover wider language provision and mentoring. They are not a unique-attendee count for this reporting period.
- Hours measure time in sessions, not what changed for participants afterwards.
Using the kit with your own programme
If your employees volunteer with TEEI, the verified hours for your company come from the same session records as the counter above, and follow the same rule. To see how one hour travels from a session into a report, read Volunteer hours in a CSR report.
If you are planning the section for next year’s report and want to talk through which fields your programme can fill, contact the partnerships team.
