About This Event
Our monthly Language Cafe creates a relaxed space for Ukrainian newcomers to practice Norwegian conversation with native speakers. No textbooks, no tests-just friendly chat over good coffee.
The Buddy Programme volunteers facilitate small group conversations tailored to different proficiency levels, from absolute beginners to intermediate speakers.
Who Should Attend
- Ukrainian speakers learning Norwegian (all levels welcome)
- Norwegian volunteers who want to help newcomers practice
- Buddy pairs looking for structured language practice
- Anyone interested in bilingual conversation
What to Bring
- An open mind and willingness to make mistakes
- Questions about Norwegian language or culture
- Your own coffee money (we’ll provide the conversation!)
Format
We organize participants into small groups of 4-6 people, mixing language learners with native speakers. Each group chooses conversation topics from provided prompt cards, covering everyday situations like:
- Grocery shopping and food
- Weather and seasons
- Work and education
- Family and hobbies
- Norwegian customs and traditions
Why Language Cafes Work
Research shows that conversational practice in low-pressure environments significantly accelerates language learning. Our cafes provide:
- Real-world vocabulary practice
- Cultural context for language use
- Confidence building through supportive feedback
- Social connections that extend beyond the event
